early in the design process, before fabrication of wireless components like
power amplifiers and RF front-end modules. It also offers engineers the ability
to design multiple RF and microwave integrated circuits (implemented with a
variety of technologies), assemble them in a package or on a multilayer
laminate, and simulate electrical and 3-D electromagnetic performance all
within a single platform. With ADS 2011, design verification no longer needs to
stop at the boundary of a single integrated circuit’s or module’s technology.

Multi-Technology Co-Design

Multi-technology design allows multiple IC’s combined with laminate and
packaging PCB to all be designed together. Tradeoffs can be made interactively
on the IC, laminate, packaging and print circuit boards being designed or
co-designed together. Using ADS 2011, engineers can design individual RF and
microwave integrated circuits with different technologies (e.g., GaAs, SiGe,
GaN, and Silicon CMOS).

High Speed Digital

Unique capability added for Power Integrity analysis on PCBs and packages with
heavily perforated power ground planes. ADS 2011 offers accurate modeling of
multi-GHz effects with an easy setup via our SI/PI analysis tool. IBIS-AMI

New Load Pull Data Controller

The new load pull data controller allows for direct, instant loading of load
pull data and can handle multiple files for easier review of data. ADS 2011
users can immediately use data to simulate matching networks making it easier
for design optimization, including improved discrete optimization and the
automatic interpolation of scattered measurement data.

New Layout Improvements

The unified graphical layer definition allows for a single, unified entry of
layer and stackup data. Thus saving time and eliminating errors due to
inconsistent entries. ADS 2011’s native physical multi-substrate support makes
adding multiple substrates as easy as placing a component and offers unlimited
levels of technology stacking (i.e. IC on a module on a PCB).

I had to modify original instruction a bit. But this worked for me

*******************************************
Install using exe installer.
Skip setup License with License Wizard, always.
After Install replace dll with new patched in:

- %ADS%\bin\agsl.dll
- %ADS%\bin\win32_64\agsl.dll

Add environment variable that contain new license

AGILEESOFD_LICENSE_FILE = %ADS%\license.lic

Also add ADS_LICENSE_FILE = %ADS%\license.lic

Do not add the license pref (USER-PC) env variable

Oh, in my Vista system.. control Panel-->system-->advanced system Settings-->Environment variable. It should be similar for other OS's
I added the variables in both "User" and "system" as I wasn't sure which one applied. But after I got the correct variables in and did not add the one mentioned above, it worked for me. So YMMV but I dont think the patched DLL's are bad..

The following environment variable is needed but the original instruction didn't tell that:
ADS_LICENSE_FILE = %ADS%\license.lic
(As optikon said).
I added that for 2011.01 in Win7-64 and fortunately it worked.

No nothing work and eveything is set up exactly like described
Everytime I start the software it ask me to give permission to the lic manager to open and at this time I need to point to a valid license.
When I click next a message box tell that an environnement variable ADS_LICENSE_FILE is blocking.
I tried in admin and not admin and same result ....

My computer use Win 7 32 bits Ultimate

Hi guys. I tested the post that "rmb1099 " just posted and it works. thanks rmb1099.
And send it again.
After copying the cracked "dll" files to their appropriate places like below:
For example:
C:\Agilent\ADS2011_01\bin
C:\Agilent\ADS2011_01\bin\win32_64
C:\Agilent\ADS2011_01\fem\230\bin\Win32
C:\Agilent\ADS2011_01\fem\230\bin\Win64
Define an environment variable with variable name "ADS_LICENSE_FILE" ("AGILEESOFD_LICENSE_FILE" will not work). Then in the variable value, type the path of "license.lic".
Be sure it’ll work.

I happen to have a fresh install of Win 7 on a 32 bit machine, I will try ADS2011.05 for you and get some screen shots if I can get it to work. I have it running fine on my Win 7 x64 machine. I'll report back. ADS is a really powerful tool, its worth the trouble to try and get it to work.. let me try it.

This Version is ADS 2011.05

Download it from Agilent direct:

http://edocs.soco.agilent.com/display/downloads/Advanced+Design+System

Then, download my help files (includes medicine for this 2011.05 release) - older releases are similar.

http://www.fileserve.com/file/BKhzDeY/ADS2011_Info.rar

Pass: sonsivri

Read through my 12 step install notes and look at my screenshots. I provide plenty of detail.
I have tested and verified this install on a fresh Win 7 x64 and a Win 7 x32

I hope this helps anybody still having trouble.

S-Parameter Simulation: Schematic Simulator

Agilent Advanced Design System (ADS) is an industry standard microwave engineering computer-aided-design (CAD) program. Agilent ADS allows microwave engineers to analyze, design, and simulate active and passive microwave components and systems. In this tutorial, a microstrip transmission line will be designed and analyzed. It should be noted that there are two ways to design/simulate in Agilent ADS; schematic (equation-based) or full-wave (Method-of-Moments). The microstrip line will be designed and simulated using the schematic simulator in this tutorial, while in Tutorial 2 a full-wave simulation will be performed using Agilent ADS’s full-wave simulator, Momentum.

Microstrip Transmission Line Design Values

Operational Frequency: 1 GHz to 5 GHz
Substrate: 2.2 Permittivity and Height of 1.57 mm
Characteristic Impedance: 50 Ohm
Electrical length: 90 degrees at 2.4 GHz.

Simulation Setup

Open up Agilent ADS, the window shown in Fig. 1 will pop-up onto the main screen. Click on Create a new project and give it a name; make sure not to use any spaces and choose the units for the design.

Figure 1. Agilent ADS window.

Once you have given a name to the new project a new schematic window will appear as shown in Fig. 2. On the left side of the schematic window is the Palette List and Component Palette, the Palette List allows you to chose different simulation and microwave circuit components.

Figure 2. Schematic layout window.

An S-Parameter simulation will be performed on the microstrip transmission line. Therefore, use the Palette List and pick Simulation-S_Param, the Component Palette will change and S-Parameter simulation components can now be chosen. Place a SP and two Term components onto the layout region. The Term component lets ADS know how many ports and the port impedance (50 Ohms in our case) for the S-Parameter simulation. An S-Parameter simulation from 1 GHz to 5 GHz with 401 points will be performed, therefore double-click the SP component and change the necessary values. After placing the S-Parameter components, your schematic window should look like Fig. 3.

Figure 3. Schematic layout window showing required S-Parameter components.

Next, the microstrip line has to be defined and placed onto the schematic layout window. To do this, click on the Palette List and choose TLines-Microstrip. The substrate on which the microstrip line will be designed on has to be defined. To do this, place the MSUB component onto the layout region and double-click on it. The properties of the microstrip substrate can be changed; change the substrate height (H) to 1.57 mm and the dielectric permittivity (Er) to 2.2.

Next, place a MLIN component onto the layout region and connect it to the two Term components. The width (W) and length (L) of the MLIN component has to be changed to obtain the correct characteristic impedance and phase shift, respectively. To calculate the required width (W) to provide a 50 Ohm characteristic impedance, select the MLIN component and then go to Tools>LineCalc>Send Selected Component to LineCalc enter a design frequency of 2.4 GHz. Fig. 4 shows the LineCalc window. It is important to double check the substrate definition. For the Electrical properties enter 50 for the impedance and 90 for the E_Eff (effective electrical length). Once you are done click on synthesize and the width (W=4.84 mm) and length (L=22.70 mm) will be calculated. Enter these values for the MLIN component. The finished layout window should look like Fig. 5.

Figure 4. LineCalc window.

Figure 5. Completed layout.

At this point, you should save your design. To simulate the design, go to Simulate>Simulate. After simulation is complete, a data window will appear. Here you can plot the S-parameter data in different formats and in different types of charts. Fig. 6 shows the data window with a plot of S11 and S21 magnitude and a plot of the phase between Port 1 and Port 2 of the microstrip line component. The magnitude plot confirms that the microstrip line is indeed 50 Ohms, while the phase plot confirms that at 2.4 GHz the electrical length is 90 degrees.
